At the printers?

My latest book is off being printed. Part of a longer ongoing project involving the pictures I make on a daily or weekly basis. I’m interested in the idea of the flanéur in the 21st century using technology to gather thoughts and observations about the world around them. Here are some spreads from it. Advertisements

The summer holidays is a time to dip into my extensive photobook library. Or even just my library. Sadly this year my books are packed away for the duration of the renovation we are having built for us at the moment.  Since packing up I have bought 3 books and also kept a handful of texts… Continue reading Currently Reading*

Memory/Place/Archive

img_4349-version-2One of the aspects of photography that captivates me greatly as indeed does so many people, is its capacity to aid memory. This is a contentious issue. With arguments against there being a tsunami of photographs and arguments that think a photograph made is better than a photograph not made, and other where the current sate of the art and technology is at a forefront, and every argument in-between

So for todays serving from my archive I present  some images I made on an ongoing and regular basis. For all intents and purpose however this view has now disappeared. You see we are 1/3 of the way though the renovation of our house and these images as unremarkable as they are on the surface hold great significance for me. I even setup a dedicated tumblr for them. The premise was simple. Watch the light sweep across my backyard, which faced north. Make a picture if I felt the light was interesting, pick the most stunning ones and upload them to tumblr.

For all intents and purposes, this idea has run its course, for the time being. Soon I will upload the remaining most interesting images. Perhaps they will become an exhibition or book, either way making a picture facing north from my back doorstep has ceased, or maybe I’ll choose another angle and a different set of parameters to keep the work ticking away?

Holidays & Archives

With a substantial amount of time up my sleeve now during the summer school holidays here in Australia, I hope to publish more frequently. I am poking around in my digital archive looking for nuggets of which there are a few. Here’s one to kick things off. Digital allows this kind of imagery, for several reasons,… Continue reading Holidays & Archives

Food for thought?

Well, one way to differentiate your work from the masses posting on Instagram is to make your work into prints and display them somewhere. Just that separates you from most. A print is a real thing, something you can stand in front of and look at for a while. But also build a website, make… Continue reading Food for thought?

YANB!

Yet another new blog, this time on Tumblr, part of a larger marketing plan, and loosely related to book making. The address is http://emptyshops.tumblr.com Once I have caught up with uploading all the content things will tick along much more slowly. Today’s fun fact, there is a daily limit on how many picture per day… Continue reading YANB!

Reasons to be elsewhere #21061106

Eastman house have a really interesting exhibition on at the moment A MATTER OF MEMORY: PHOTOGRAPHY AS OBJECT IN THE DIGITAL AGE With the convenience and ubiquity of computers and smartphones, the majority of photographic images are being recorded digitally rather than on film. As this transformation has broadened access to photographic images—both in making… Continue reading Reasons to be elsewhere #21061106
